Multi-Site Firewall Policy Consolidation and Optimization
Consolidated firewall policies across 23 sites, reducing rule base complexity by 60% and establishing standardized security profiles managed through a centralized Panorama hierarchy.
The problem
The healthcare network operated Palo Alto firewalls at 23 sites with no centralized policy management. Each site had been configured independently, resulting in inconsistent security profiles, duplicate rules, and no clear ownership of policy changes. HIPAA compliance audits were becoming increasingly difficult, and the security team needed a way to demonstrate consistent policy enforcement across all locations.
The approach
We designed a Panorama device group hierarchy that reflected the organization's business units and site types. Each firewall was migrated to the appropriate template-stack, with security policies consolidated into a standardized rule base. We performed a complete rule base analysis — identifying unused rules, shadowed rules, and overly permissive policies — and produced a phased migration plan. The consolidation was executed in waves, with validation checks after each wave to ensure no service disruption.
Results
- 23 sites consolidated under centralized Panorama management
- 60% reduction in total rule count through deduplication and optimization
- Standardized security profiles across all sites
- HIPAA audit preparation time reduced from 3 weeks to 2 days
- Zero service disruptions during migration
